Reading

During March, students will be learning how to pick out the most important part of a story. We will be discussing how the most important part is connected to how the problem is solved or a change in the main character. We will be reading various books throughout the month to practice this comprehension strategy. We will also celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday at the beginning of the month.  We will be reading some of his books and enjoying the fun language and rhyming words that he uses.

Word Study

We will continue to work with new spelling words focused on beginning and ending blends, short vs. long vowel sounds, and the -or and -ar controlled r sound.  We will also add the following words to the Word Wall this month, and they should continue to be reviewed along with previously learned Word Wall words:

about, some, then, ask, them, were, under, want, into, make, fast, put

Writing

During March, we will be continuing our realistic fiction unit. We are developing characters that we can use in the creation of our own series! We are using model texts like Henry and Mudge, Junie B. Jones, and others to help us see examples of great realistic writing.

Math

During March, we will also be studying coins (penny, dime, nickel, and quarter). We will count these coins up to $1.00, and use our knowledge of skip counting to help! Later in the month, we will begin working with different types of graphs. We will gather data and change that information into a bar graph or picture graph.

Math Vocab Words: penny, nickel, dime, quarter, count on, bar graph, picture graph, data, tally chart, survey

Science/Social Studies

During this month we will continue our science unit on sound and light.  We will complete many fun experiments to see how sound and light travel.  At the end of the month, we will begin a forces, motion, and magnets unit.  We are excited to experiment with push, pull, speed, friction and magnets.
