School Counseling Programs

Elementary Counseling Services:

*Programs are based on student need and availability*

Backpack Program:  Nutritional snacks and supplemental food items are sent home with families each weekend who are in need of extra support.  It is available to any family in need and an application must be completed.

Big Buddy/Little Buddy Program: This program is designed for students in grades 1-3 who would benefit from weekly contact with a high school student, who serves as a positive role model. The program is limited to a set number of students in each of our elementary schools and have been selected for this school year. Should your child be in the program, please review the dates on the Big Buddy tab and contact me with any questions.

Caring and Sharing Program:  A program available for families in need during December. Other assistance is available throughout the school year. Please contact Mrs. Heckendorn should you be a family in need or a family who like to assist one of our families.

Classroom Lessons:  Lessons occur in your child's classroom throughout the year in grades K-3.  Topics include coping skills, social skills, self-esteem, anger management, friendship skills and career exploration (in grade 2).

Kids Group: Kids Group is a small support group (4 - 6 students) that helps students learn coping skills to deal with the perceived stressors in life that may be having an adverse effect on their lives and affecting them during the school day. While the group is not considered 'therapy', the small group dynamics allows students to learn new skills, to recognize that they are not alone and that other children share similar feelings and experiences. Groups run a set number of sessions based on the need, meeting once a week. Topics are specific to the needs of the group. Parent permission is required for this program (see below). Should you wish to have your child participate in a group, please contact your child's classroom teacher or myself.

Individual Sessions:  Students may be referred by parents and/or teachers to meet with the School Counselor as needs arise on an individual basis.  Sessions are not meant to be long-term, but to help support students through a difficult time or situation in his/her life.

School-Based Therapy:  PCBH (Pennsylvania Comprehensive Behavioral Health) offers therapeutic counseling to students in need.  Sessions can occur during the school day or at their office.  The sessions are billed through your insurance.  An application and release of information is required and set-up through the counselor’s office.
